Over the last three years, with the spreading recession, New York has witnessed the closure of dozens of galleries, and the prospect of a diminished opportunity for artists to connect with the public. In his recent peregrinations through and around Williamsburg Brooklyn, James Kalm has encountered several new venues that've recently opened. From the ruggedly provisional to the slicker mega spaces, we see that despite the economic downturn, art, like a weed, is sprouting up where and when it's least expected.
