James Biederman, “New Paintings”
Galeria Janet Kurnatowski 2005-11-01 Keeping alive a strain of abstract painting that relies on the nuanced juxtaposition of subtly toned hues and vigorous spontaneous brush work, Biederman, a long time activist in the Williamsburg arts community, displays a selection of recent work. The visual fix from a six month stint in western Wyoming reverberates in some of these compositions. Broad horizons and a new more open spaciousness seem to carry a whiff of prairie sagebrush and offer a serene contrast from some of the gnarlier clusters of slashing strokes that are this artist’s “handwriting.” With a keen interest in painting evident, Janet Kurnatowski, is a young galleriest who’s expanding, yet again, the neighborhood within which we can now expect to see quality art.
