Photoville
2013-09-17 Nestled between the East River and the BQE, Brooklyn Bridge Park is the home of the second annual Photoville, which opens Sept. 19th and will run through Sunday, Sept. 29th. Pier 5 is turned into a little village of shipping containers (51 in all), each serving as a miniature gallery space hosting a different photography exhibition. The festival is a relaxed, stripped-down, and democratic approach to showing photography, and the neighborhood feel allows the great variety to be complimentary rather than jarring. Tyler Hicks' documentation of the Arab Spring lives near Jerry Vezzuso's deadpan portraits of hair models from 1985 and Nick Zinner's photos taken between shows while touring with the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. There are talks and workshops, a walk-in camera obscura that projects the Manhattan skyline, and a beer garden.
